Every year on October 24, World Polio Day is marked to promote polio vaccination and polio eradication. In order to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who headed the first team to develop a vaccine to prevent poliomyelitis, Rotary International established World Polio Day more than ten years ago.

In order to achieve a world free of polio, we must be resilient, adaptable, and innovative. India’s eradication was made feasible by ensuring that everyone had fair access to immunizations, including the most vulnerable and marginalised people residing in the most rural areas of the nation. Because of a strong commitment at all levels, policymakers, health professionals, frontline staff, partners, and community volunteers collaborated to provide polio drops to every kid, whether they were at home, in school, or on the go.
World Polio Day 2022: Theme
The 2022 theme for World Polio Day is Beyond: A healthier future for mothers and children. The prevention and life-saving services connected with it will be made available to children who have been spared from polio and, with their mothers, other vaccine-preventable diseases by specialists in polio, vaccinations, and maternal and child health. As a result, expectant mothers will have a happy pregnancy experience, and young children will be able to develop to their full potential.
World Polio Day:
What is Polio?
Polio is a debilitating and possibly fatal infectious disease. Although there is no cure, there are secure and reliable immunizations. Immunization can protect against polio. Multiple doses of the polio vaccination almost always provide a youngster with lifetime protection. Therefore, the plan to end polio is to immunise every child until transmission halts and there is no polio left in the globe.
World Polio Day: What are the Causes of Polio?
An RNA virus that causes polio causes 85% of cases to be paralytic. The poliovirus is most frequently disseminated in unhygienic places. Food and water contamination can transmit the infection. The polio virus can be passed from infected people through their faeces. Poliomyelitis can also develop as a result of close interaction with a person who is poliovirus-infected.
World Polio Day: Polio prevention & treatment
There are two immunizations that can shield against polio:
- Depending on the patient’s age, the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) is injected into either the leg or the arm. Since 2000, the United States has only employed IPV.
- In many parts of the world, oral poliovirus vaccination (OPV) is still utilised.
Children are protected by the polio vaccine because it primes their bodies to resist the poliovirus.
